It’s easy for me to get focused on new advances in treatment of Type I Diabetes more than prevention. Knowing that about myself presents some internal conflict, since my specialty is Family Medicine, and aren’t we all about prevention of disease? My bias comes from an honest place, we live with diabetes in our house every day. If there were only a cure!
Ok, now that that is out of the way, back to prevention. I read an article today about an exciting advance by researchers at the University of Virginia. They have mapped susceptibility to Type I to a very specific genetic location. The more we understand about how people get Type I, the better chance we have to fight it off in the first place, and that I can wholeheartedly get behind.
